The authors reviewed all auction catalogues and literature cited in this reference list, resulting in the most up-to-date overview currently available. Thanks to the extensive collection of annotated auction catalogues, publications, and visual documentation held by the RKD, they were able to eliminate several incorrect attributions as well as erroneous references. The Witt Photographic Collection at The Courtauld also proved valuable in identifying a number of artworks.
In the course of their research, the authors also encountered several auctions referencing other potential works by Samuel van Hoogstraten. In cases where no illustration was available and authorship could not be verified—nor attributed to another artist—the work was included in this list. Also included are works recorded in the documentation of the Iconographic Bureau (IB), housed at the RKD, which lack illustrations and are not cited in the aforementioned literature.
This list should be regarded as a dynamic and ongoing project. Ideally, it will diminish in size over time, as future research helps to resolve current uncertainties in attribution. Nonetheless, it serves as a valuable reference framework for identifying and evaluating future discoveries related to the oeuvre of Samuel van Hoogstraten. We encourage anyone who comes across a new reference or a work listed here to inform us.
